American Idol Hopefuls Speak Out About What You Don't See On the Show

Nearly eight thousand hopefuls auditioned in Memphis for a chance to make it onto American Idol.

Some of those turned away are speaking out about what you don't see on the show.

American Idol is one of the hottest shows on television but recently one former contestant accused producers of some deceptive editing.

We talked with two other former contestants who says "what you see on American Idol is not always what you get."

Memphians Velvit Taper and Amesha Martin feel they can sing with the best of them.

Back in September they lined up at the FedEx Forum with other American Idol hopefuls, hoping to sing their way into stardom.

"Yeah, I was thinking, I got this, I got this, I can sing so I know I got this," says hopeful, Velvit Taper.

But, about half way through the audition process both women began changing their feelings about the tryouts.

"Well, American Idol is phony to me," says Ameshi Martin.

Both women claim they were led to believe that they would audition in front of Simon, Paula and Randy. But, when it came time to sing, two people they didn't recognize did the judging and minutes later they were out of the competition.

"They are not looking for real talent, they are looking for people they can make fun of," says Martin.

Other Memphians have complained about tryouts too.

In an e-mail from MemphisRap.com, former contestant, Wandera Hitchye, accused Idol producers of doing some trick editing to make it look like she auditioned in front of Siimon, Paula and Randy when she didn't.

"I believe her, because that's what we did," says Taper.

But, could these complaints about one of the hottest shows in television just be sour grapes.

Taper adds, "no I'm not complaining, I feel like if I was in front of Paula and Simon, the real judges would have picked me."

It was an experience these women say they'll never forget.

American Idol Officials did not return our phone calls.

Both of the women say the show needs to come clean about the audition process.

As for their singing careers, they say they don't plan to give up on music, but they have given up on American Idol.
