American Idol Goes Hollywood
Tonight, American Idol moves to the Hollywood round.
Finally.
Look, we like Idol. Still. We do.
It's just that with each passing season our tolerance for the early auditions wane. The initial giddiness ("Hey, Idol's back!") gives way to weariness ("Oh God, another creepy loser's flirting with Paula.")
And it's not just the bad auditions that tire us, but the good ones, too. In fact, we'd argue the good auditions are even harder to watch than the bad. The bad ones, at least, might be worth some laughs. The good ones, at worst, might break your heart. How many times have we seen a singer with promise disappear in the spotlight? David Brown of season four comes to mind-great audition, forgotten contestant.
Brown, by the way, began his fade in Hollywood .
Ah, Hollywood ...Now, this is where the show gets good. The deluded have been weeded out, the singers remain, the stars emerge and the show becomes worthy of your time.
This season's Hollywood pass comes with the added attraction of contestants playing their own instruments, should they choose to be so bold. We're not sure if banging on a drum set will help sell a kid as the next Carrie Underwood, but we're game if they are. (And besides, Karen Carpenter did all right on lead vocals and the snare.)
Sure, it's possible that Idol will come out of Hollywood with 24 unexciting talents. It's also possible that the show will hit the jackpot. You just never know.
And it's worth watching to find out. Still.
