American Idol to Offer Disappointing Guest Stars and Keep Paula Abdul
Every week there is new speculation about possible guest stars on American Idol and about possible replacements for Paula Abdul. According to the Sunday Mail, the latest potential Paula replacement is Victoria Beckham (but apparently Simon Cowell has already vetoed it). Not that there's anything wrong with speculation, because it helps to add to the excitement of the show. It's kind of like how sports magazines and news sites try to predict which players will be drafted by which professional teams.
After last seasons Elvis Theme Week and Prince's guest appearance on the finale, expectations have been set extremely high for American Idol 6. Prince raised the bar for what American Idol fans now expect in regards to guest stars. And just in case excitement wasn't high enough, American Idol producers have gone even further and dumped gasoline on the already burning fire by repeatedly teasing about some type of surprise event show that will blow America away.
Just thinking back to American Idol 5, in addition to Prince, viewers were also treated to appearances by legends like Stevie Wonder, Barry Manilow, Kenny Rogers, and Rod Stewart. If you buy into the hype about the surprise event show and try to think about names that would somehow compare to or exceed last year's guest stars, then names like Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, and Madonna obviously spring to mind.
In fact considering Lythgoe's promise of the biggest thing to happen to Idol in five years, anything outside of Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson singing a duet while Bruce Springsteen plays guitar and Madonna dances provocatively with Elvis' corpse would likely be a disappointment. Even though American Idol producers readily admit to the desire to do a Beatles theme week, Ken Warwick told USA Today back in January that no plans were in place yet to have Paul McCartney mentor on the show. In regards to Michael Jackson, American Idol producers haven't so vehemently denied a rumored guest star since Prince.
Here's a scary thought that is the basis for our somewhat sarcastic headline. What if American Idol producers really don't have a musical legend like Paul McCartney or Michael Jackson signed? What if they really aren't calling every female singer with a pulse to see if they might be interested in replacing Paula Abdul? Would American Idol be as fun without all the constant rumors and speculation?
