Top 10 American Idol Women, Not As Strong As Last Week

The top ten ladies of American Idol hit the stage tonight, and with the guys stepping it up last night, the ladies have some pressure on them.  How will the ladies do?  Will Seacrest bring up Antonella Barba's internet pictures?  Will Ryan and Simon get into an on-air slap fight?  We shall see.  These are my quick thoughts while watching tonight's episode.

Randy is wearing a mid-90's Hawaiian shirt that's more than a little silly.
Gina Glocksen is up first and she dedicates her song to her boyfriend.  Awww.  Gina's wearing a tight red dress that she she doesn't look too comfortable in.  Gina sings what sounds like an 80's power ballad.  She's got a big voice, like everyone knows, but she doesn't do it for me.  Well done, but I don't see Gina going too far in the competition.  Judges like it, don't love it.

Couch circle time.  I think they're advertising this soda pop brand called “Coca-Cola”.  You know what, I think I'm going to try this Coca-Cola.

Alaina is up next and hopefully she can improve upon last week.  The only reason Alaina is still around are her looks, but she does have some potential.  Show me something, Alaina!  She's singing a Dixie Chicks song, I think.  She starts off well, but her voice isn't really powerful enough for the chorus and she goes out of tune during it.  Simon and Randy criticize her pretty hard, deservedly though.  They all agree, though, that she looks good.

Lakisha, the favorite, will be performing a Gladys Knight joint next.  Oh, yeah. She's singing "Midnight Train to Georgia", which is probably one of the 40 greatest songs of all-time.  She pretty much kills it, and I wish she had been able to sing the whole song.  Not overwhelmingly great like last time, but still the best this season has to offer.  The judges loves it, but Simon wasn't a fan of her outfit.

Melinda Doolittle hits up the stage next.  She's singing “My Funny Valentine” which I'm pretty sure is a Billie Holliday song.  An interesting choice, but it does show off Melinda's voice/range.  She seems way more confident on stage than in previous episodes.  Wow, a really great performance.  Simon says “That was incredible.”
See, this is why I like Simon.  There are so many judges/pundits/whatever who use hyperbole all the time, touting every person who shows marginal talent as the greatest thing on earth.  Simon doesn't, is brutally honest, so when he actually does say something nice about someone, it has a real effect.  It has a million times more substance than a compliment from Paula Abdul.

Antonella Barba, of internet pictures fame, hits the stage next.  It looks as if there will be no on-air discussion of her racy photos.  Probably a good decision.  She'll be dropping some Celine Dion on us.  Way better performance from Antonella tonight.  A little out of tune in places at the beginning, but from the mid-point on, I thought it was pretty good.  The judges are fairly brutal to her, except for Paula, obviously.  The dynamic between the judges, Ryan and bitter contestants gets so freaking weird at times.

Jordin Sparks, the dark horse on the girl's side, is up next.  I do not know this song at all.  It sounds like some mid-90's R&B slow jam, but what do I know?  I'm not sure about that performance, it certainly wasn't as good as last week.  She actually starts crying after the song.  The judges like it.

Stephanie Edwards is up next.  For me, Stephanie is in that second-tier of the ladies, below Doolittle, Lakisha, and Jordin Sparks.  She's pretty good, but bland.  Really good ending to her song, but still not a great performance.  Simon and Paula love it, but Randy is lukewarm.

Leslie Hunt, the gawky redhead, is on stage next.  I'm not a huge fan of Leslie's, but we really haven't seen much from her outside of her performance last week.  I recognize this as some pop song, and I'm an idiot for not knowing what it really is.  A really good performance, up until when she starts scatting.  Otherwise, real good.  Surprising.  Simon disses Paula, which is always fun.

Haley Scarnato, a relatively forgotten contestant, dedicates her song to her fiance.  And
technical difficulties hit me right in the middle of Haley's performance, so I get to see none of it.  Comment below if you saw it and want to inform the masses on how it was and how the judges liked it.  Stupid internet.

Sabrina Sloan hits the stage to finish the night off.  Sabrina sings a ballad and she's pretty darn good, kind of misses a high note, but recovers well.  Sabrina has got a better voice than I thought, but she totally botches the final note.  Man, that last part was bad.  The judges really like her though, saying she'll be a player on American Idol this season.
