American Idol Top 12 Starts Tonight
Last week on American Idol, we saw the departure of four more hopefuls, including the very young Antonella Barba. We still can’t get over the booting out of AJ Tabaldo, who is a much better singer than Sanjaya Malakar, yet we have already accepted the fact that no American of Asian origin will ever win in this talent search, unless of course, all the Asians in continental US unite to vote for one.
So, the party is over for the chosen top 12 of American Idol 6 as they must get down to serious business this week to prove who deserves to stay in the competition. Well, you know it’s one thing to make it in the final 12 but it’s another thing to reach the finale.
This week, the competition heats up as the final 12 faces a bigger stage, bigger crowd and bigger expectations. Being in the top 12 entails more sacrifices and more difficult decisions for each of them.
More sacrifices mean being away from their loved ones and having to endure their very tight schedule—from rehearsals to rehearsals to more rehearsals. And to top it all, just when you thought you’ve done enough to make your performance great, the judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson will still tell you they’re not jumping up and down their seats and your performance is just okay.
And then there are the difficult decisions they have to make—the song choice. Of course in the finals every week there will be themes, there can be a Mariah Carey night or a Diana Ross night or maybe songs from the ’60s, who knows. The most important thing, and the judges always emphasize this, is to pick the right song. The song they sing can either make or break them.
So, did you agree with the chosen top 12? Well, whether you agree with this season’s top 12 or not is another story but we didn’t choose, America did so all we can do right now is to just sit back, relax and enjoy the show. And so, let’s meet again the American Idol 6 top 12:
Chris Sligh, 28. Chris is the son of missionaries who currently lives in Greenville, South Carolina. He spent 10 years with his family in Germany. Since attending Bob Jones University, he has traveled and performed with a band.
Blake Lewis, 25. Blake began “beat boxing” in his senior year of high school. He was a member of a youth choir group that traveled to Europe.
Chris Richardson, 22. Chris is a supervisor at a restaurant. He was born in Belgium into a military family and performs at local clubs.
Sanjaya Malakar, 17. Sanjaya currently lives in Federal Way, Washington, and comes from a family of singers. He spent four years in Hawaii performing with the Hawaii Children’s Theater.
Brandon Rogers, 29. Brandon is one of the two background singers who made it in the top 12 (the other is Melinda Doolittle). He has been singing for as long as he can remember. He also works as a voice coach and a wedding singer. His mother is a published songwriter.
Phil Stacey, 29. Phil has a degree in vocal performance and is a singer in the Navy. He is married with two children.
Melinda Doolittle, 29. Melinda is a graduate of Belmont University in Nashville and has a bachelor’s degree in Commercial Music. She is a backup singer on stage and in the studio.
Lakisha Jones, 27. Lakisha began singing at age five. Gospel is her favorite type of music but she has trained formally in classical music.
Gina Glocksen, 22. Gina works as a dental assistant. She also performs in a cover band. She tried out for American Idol last season and made it to Day 4 of the Hollywood Round.
Stephanie Edwards, 19. Stephanie sang at the famed Apollo Theater when she appeared on It’s Showtime at the Apollo. She has won every singing contest she has ever entered.
Jordin Sparks, 17. Jordin began singing when she was only 18 months old. She won the Arizona Idol contest. Her favorite band is Something Corporate.
Haley Scarnato, 24. Haley recently became engaged. She has been performing as a freelance singer since she was 15 years old and considers Celine Dion her hero.
Making it to the final 12 is just the beginning of their Idol journey with more twists and turns. This week, we will be watching the top 12 as they sing their hearts out to prove to America why they made it this far. Who will stand out among the final 12?
