American Idol - Haley Scarnato's Short Shorts Come Up Short

During the American Idol top eight performance show, Simon Cowell told Haley Scarnato (who was wearing short shorts), "I think you have a very good tactic at the moment Haley, wear the least amount of clothes as possible. Because and look I'll be honest with you, you can't do well in this competition based on your voice because there are much better singers."

Well, it turns out that Haley Scarnato's tactic wasn't good enough, because she was eliminated on the most recent American Idol results show. During the results show, host Ryan Seacrest asked Haley if she was offended by what Simon Cowell had said. Haley replied "Not necessarily offended, I mean it hurts a little bit, cause you know, but I felt like, I mean I'm not going to wear anything that I feel like is going to be completely inappropriate. I mean we're on stage, and we're performing and stuff, and I thought it was just fun, it was Latin week. "

However, Latin week wasn't the first time that Simon Cowell has commented on Haley Scarnato's wardrobe. When Haley performed "Ain't Misbehavin" in a short green dress, Simon Cowell said "I think you've got great legs." When Haley performed "Tell Him" in short shorts and a backless top, Simon Cowell said "You naughty little thing." Cowell also added "I think people are going to be talking about a lot more than your singing tonight."

So was Simon Cowell correct in suggesting that Haley Scarnato was using wardrobe as a tactic in the competition? Or were Cowell's comments inappropriate and completely uncalled for? Could Cowell's comments have cost Haley Scarnato votes among American Idol's conservative family viewership?
