'American Idol' Spin-Off for Bands

With the unparalleled success of American Idol, it didn't seem like it would take long to create a spin-off. Much like Grey's Anatomy or Friends, the popularity of American Idol means it will see a new incarnation of itself hitting the airwaves sometime soon. American Idol creator Simon Fuller will be teaming up with Fox once again, and another music-based reality competition will soon be on the network.

This time, however, instead of seeing pop stars compete for top honors, entire bands from all genres will take to the stage. Fox has given the green light to the series, tentatively called The Search For the Next Great American Band. Sources have speculated to Reuters that Next Great American Band could take to the airwaves when American Idol is on its break in the fall. The Fox network has yet to give any concrete details about the show's airtime.

American Band will feature musical acts of all ages, sizes, styles and genres. In the end, bands will compete for the title of "Next Great American Band" and a recording contract. Also, much like American Idol, American Band is set to start with nationwide auditions, where a panel of pre-selected judges will narrow the field down to 10 semifinalists who will then have the chance to perform in front of a live studio audience. No word on who the judges will be, but it's unlikely that Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul or Randy Jackson will be pulling double-duty, nor will Ryan Seacrest.

Again, just like American Idol, and seemingly every other reality TV show, the bands will be asked to take on a different musical challenge, with various styles and themes predominating. After the performances are done, viewers across America will be eligible to call or text message their votes in order to determine who says on the show, who goes home early, and who is crowned "Next Great American Band". Fans who watched American Idol on Wednesday were treated to a lengthy promo of the series from 19 Entertainment and FremantleMedia North America. American Idol creator Simon Fuller will produce along with Idol veterans Nigel Lythgoe, Ken Warwick and Cecile Frot-Coutaz.

The Search for the Next Great American Band will be another of several band-themed reality TV shows. Some series, like Popstars and Making the Band focus on constructing a brand new band, while others, such as Rock Star: INXS, Rock Star: Supernova, The Search For the Next Pussycat Doll and R U the Girl have sought to add a new member to an already existing group.
